Book Review: Spy School Revolution by Stuart Gibbs

If you like your spy stories with explosions, secret plots, and a hero who is constantly in over his head, Spy School Revolution absolutely delivers. This one is pure middle-grade mayhem in the best way.

What it's about (no spoilers… well, not many)

Here's the story in my own words: Ben gets shot by his sort of friend Erica. She is the best spy in training and wants to save the world. But she is caught on camera when the office next to Ben is blown up in the CIA headquarters. Ben's family are finally briefed in Ben's status as spy in training. Everyone thinks that Erica has gone to the dark side especially Ben's second best friend, Zoe Zibbel. Ben has to find the colonial era group that blackmailed Erica and thwart their plan. Easy. Right? Things go wrong with so many twists and turns it's impossible to keep track of.

Why it works

The book is fast, funny, and just the right amount of ridiculous. Ben is clueless in the most relatable way, Erica is ten steps ahead of everyone (even when she might be on the wrong side), and the grown-ups are either suspicious, useless, or secretly brilliant. The mystery around the colonial-era group feels big and important, but the story still keeps that fun, school-plus-spying vibe that makes this series so addictive.

The best part is the constant chaos: just when you think you understand what's going on, there's another twist, another betrayal, or another explosion. You will absolutely question who to trust, and you will definitely laugh along the way.

I give Spy School Revolution a full 5 stars and recommend it to anyone who loves spy books, mystery, or non-stop thrills. It's great for fans of funny adventure stories, younger readers who want big action without being too scary, and adults who secretly love a fast, smart, and ridiculous spy caper. Basically: if you enjoy gadgets, plots, and plot twists, this one's for you.
